Grade Percentage Calculator
Turn marks out of any total into a percentage and a letter grade. It works just as well as a test percentage calculator — the arithmetic is the same whether the paper is a quiz, a midterm or a final.

The grade percentage formula
A grade percentage is simply your score expressed out of 100 instead of out of whatever the paper happened to be marked out of. That is what makes a 38/50 comparable with a 61/80.
(Marks scored ÷ Total marks) × 100
(38 ÷ 50) × 100 = 76%
The same formula covers exam grades, test scores, quiz results and coursework marks.
Worked example
You scored 437 out of 500 across your final papers. What is your grade percentage?
- Divide your total marks by the marks available.437 ÷ 500 = 0.874
- Multiply by 100.0.874 × 100 = 87.4%
- Read the letter grade off the scale.87.4% → B+
Answer87.4% — a B+
Letter grade scale
The calculator uses the common US letter scale. Your institution may band differently, so treat this as the default rather than the rule.
| Letter grade | Percentage |
|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100% |
| A | 93–96% |
| A− | 90–92% |
| B+ | 87–89% |
| B | 83–86% |
| B− | 80–82% |
| C+ | 77–79% |
| C | 73–76% |
| C− | 70–72% |
| D | 60–69% |
| F | Below 60% |
Where students use this
- Exam and test scores — turning any mark into a comparable percentage.
- Quiz and assignment grades — checking a result before it appears in the gradebook.
- Predicting a final grade — seeing what a paper needs to be worth overall.
- Attendance requirements — days present out of days in the term.
- Comparing across subjects — a 61/80 and a 38/50 are not obviously comparable until both are percentages.
For several papers of different weights, use the average percentage calculator and enter each paper's mark allocation as the group size — that produces the weighted figure your transcript will actually show.
