The grade percentage formula

A grade percentage is simply your score expressed out of 100 instead of out of whatever the paper happened to be marked out of. That is what makes a 38/50 comparable with a 61/80.

(Marks scored ÷ Total marks) × 100

(38 ÷ 50) × 100 = 76%

Worked example

You scored 437 out of 500 across your final papers. What is your grade percentage?

  1. Divide your total marks by the marks available.437 ÷ 500 = 0.874
  2. Multiply by 100.0.874 × 100 = 87.4%
  3. Read the letter grade off the scale.87.4% → B+

The calculator uses the common US letter scale. Your institution may band differently, so treat this as the default rather than the rule.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade percentage?
Divide the marks you scored by the total marks available, then multiply by 100. Scoring 38 out of 50 gives 38 ÷ 50 × 100 = 76%.
How do I work out a test percentage for several papers?
Add up every mark you scored, add up every mark available, then divide one by the other. Averaging the individual paper percentages gives a different — and usually wrong — answer whenever the papers are worth different amounts.
What percentage is a passing grade?
On the common US scale a D− at 60% is the lowest passing grade, though many courses set their own threshold. Check your syllabus rather than assuming, because pass marks vary widely between institutions and subjects.
What letter grade is 85 percent?
A B on the standard US scale, which runs from 83% to 86%. The calculator shows the letter alongside the percentage for any score you enter.
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each component percentage by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight. The average percentage calculator does exactly this if you enter the weights as group sizes.
