The win percentage formula

Win percentage is wins divided by games played. The only wrinkle is ties, which count as half a win — so they pull the figure toward 50% rather than being ignored.

(Wins ÷ Games played) × 100

(10 ÷ 15) × 100 = 66.67%

When the sport has no draws.

((Wins + Ties ÷ 2) ÷ Games played) × 100

((10 + 1) ÷ 17) × 100 = 64.71%

Worked example

A team finishes the season 10–5–2. What is their win percentage?

  1. Count every game played, ties included.10 + 5 + 2 = 17
  2. Credit each tie as half a win.10 + (2 ÷ 2) = 11
  3. Divide and multiply by 100.11 ÷ 17 × 100 ≈ 64.71%

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate win percentage?
Divide wins by games played, then multiply by 100. A 10–5 record is 10 ÷ 15 × 100 = 66.67%.
How are ties counted in win percentage?
A tie counts as half a win. That is the standard convention in the NFL, hockey and football, and it is why a 10–5–2 record works out at 64.71% rather than 66.67%. The calculator also shows the rate with ties ignored so you can compare the two.
What is a good win percentage?
It depends entirely on the sport and the level. Above 50% means more wins than losses; in most professional leagues a season above 60% is strong and above 70% is exceptional.
Is win percentage the same as winning average?
Yes — baseball quotes it as a three-decimal "winning average" (.667) while other sports quote the percentage (66.7%). The same division produces both; one is simply not multiplied by 100.
How do I calculate win rate for something other than sport?
The same way. Wins over total attempts works for sales pitches won, matches in a game, bids accepted or trades closed in profit — anything with a clean win-or-lose outcome.
